Everything you need to know about the journalist that the Biya regime has illegally detained for 8 months

Arrested since May 28, 2019, whistleblower Paul Chouta is still behind bars; months after his incarceration, a thick mystery remains about his case which is not far from being an injustice when the journalist is already the subject of various attacks from the bottom of his cell.

From bullying to the cage

The arrest of Paul Chouta on May 28, 2019 in Yaoundé by some 5 armed emissaries of the Biya regime had the effect of a bomb in the media sphere in Cameroon. Indeed only 123 days before we witnessed the arrest of President Maurice Kamto and more than a hundred of his activists. The Biya regime confirmed its degree of barbarism and the threat it represents for Cameroonians who dare to put into words their disappointment at its failure. Several events common to dictatorial regimes preceded the journalist's arrest. On more than one occasion, Paul Chouta received anonymous calls during each time he was openly threatened with death. He was asked to remain silent and not to make annoying revelations any more. Eager to serve good information to his compatriots in an environment crowded with media to rent and especially media at the orders of the regime who make up or hide information, Paul Chouta was not influenced by corruption. The whistleblower continued his work on the web.

In February 2019, he will be the victim of a violent assault at the entrance to his home in Yaoundé. Marked and shocked by the cowardly and ignoble act, he will recover from it with his head held high and will keep an indomitable determination. On May 28, 5 police officers will intercept him in the capital city before taking him to the State Secretariat for Defense (SED). Without having been tried Paul Chouta is behind bars. For almost 7 months, Tgv de l'Info has been in preventive detention at the Yaoundé central prison in Kondengui.

Beyond a grievance

It has been officially reported that Paul Chouta is charged with defamation of false news and hate speech. Indeed a complaint was filed against him by the Franco-Cameroonian writer Calixte Beyala. The whistleblower is accused of having posted a video on his Facebook page (Tgv news). This recording showed the writer in full discussion with a man in front of a school in Douala. A video which was relayed by many other people surprisingly.

The complainant also criticizes Paul Chouta for having invented an interview to support the thesis that she was talking outdoors with her lover. It is difficult to know whether it was rightly or wrongly that the journalist was offended for this reason. The file has still not been opened to date; worse still it is moved from jurisdiction to jurisdiction without the approval or notification to the lawyer of Paul Chouta. Last October, the file of Paul CHOUTA was maliciously transmitted to the court of appeal because of a dilatory and harmful call to the journalist made by a certain Me PONDI PONDI, lawyer of Mrs. NGO HEGA Mispa, the promoter of the École les paradis des anges located near the home of Calixthe BEYALA (whose file was joined to that of Paul CHOUTA).

There is a real question as to whether Paul Chouta is not condemned before being tried for something else. The charge of incitement to hatred was dropped the next day the day after his arrest, but nothing worked, he was transferred to Kodengui prison in Yaoundé. Knowing that these reasons are less repressive (6 months in prison maximum if the facts are proven), the magistrates were instructed to add the reason spreading false news which is a more repressive reason in order to make it take more time. prison and justify his arbitrary detention. Except that in the case of this case we cannot speak of the propagation of false news because this offense is linked to state security or public tranquility and the ICTR does not have jurisdiction to judge this type of ground which falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the state security court. Beyond the facade reason "act of defamation", there is no doubt that the arrest of Paul Chouta is a political arrest aimed at silencing him. A dictatorship that put 200 Cameroonians behind bars for their political ideals would certainly not have tolerated the vehemence and dexterity of a whistleblower who exposed the escapades of a beleaguered regime on a daily basis. There is no doubt that the arrest of Paul Chouta is a political arrest aimed at silencing him. A dictatorship that put 200 Cameroonians behind bars for their political ideals would certainly not have tolerated the vehemence and dexterity of a whistleblower who exposed the escapades of a beleaguered regime on a daily basis.

Poisoned in his cell ...

The detention of Paul Chouta is undoubtedly living proof of the nonexistent nature of political freedom, freedom of expression and respect for the rights of citizens in Cameroon. Advocates of the whistleblower recall that for a crime case where the accused is supposed to appear free according to the code of criminal procedure, the accused is rather treated as a criminal. Far from it, Paul Chouta is far from being safe in the cracks of the BIYA regime. It comes back to us that in the week of January 20 the journalist was the victim of poisoning. According to visitors, it was after eating a meal that he started to feel bad. Calmed thanks to the help of his relatives, he is no less fearful, according to him is difficult to secure his meals given the fact that he shares a cell with several people.

Why we must release him

Before reiterating the need to release Paul Chouta, it is worth recalling briefly his merit in the profession. Journalist and whistleblower for a few years, this young Cameroonian has worked in journalism to solve the ills of society through social networks. On his Facebook page, he has often given Cameroonians exclusive information hidden from public opinion which has enabled them to take certain important decisions in society. Among others, we remember the case of “Ibrahim Bello” in March 2017, a young Cameroonian unjustly accused of theft, who had been incarcerated tied up with rubber and electrified excessively at the Ombessa Police Station in the Center.

Having seen the detainee in a state of agony, the Commissioner of this unit will order his release. Ibrahim will be abandoned on the street at the mercy of the weather by the police. The whistleblower Paul Chouta will intervene. The journalist will launch a call for contributions to make known and especially to support the distraught young man. The “SAUVONS IBRAHIMBELLO” campaign, which he initiated and coordinated, will spread this injustice to such an extent that it will go around the world. The Biya regime was forced to act for the young man. At the same time supporters came from everywhere to support the young experienced Paul Chouta had collected exactly the sum of two million one hundred eighty thousand eight hundred and fifty FCFA after his call.

He is continuously thanked by his followers; several distinctions have come to recognize its merit. We remember that he was crowned best web-influencer 2019 by the AfriKinform platform following the votes open to Internet users. To this day, Paul Chouta, just like Ibrahim Bello and all the other people to whom he has given a smile needs US. Very few Cameroonians can do what he did in a dictatorship like ours. Hatred, tribalism, wickedness should not prevent us from seeing the sacrifices that some sometimes deploy at the expense of their lives for us for US. TO REMAIN SILENT IN FRONT OF THE INJUSTICE INFLICTED ON PAUL CHOUTA IS TO BE COMPLYED WITH THE NON-RESPECT OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF WHICH PAUL BIYA AND THE PEOPLE GIVE DAY BY DAY GUILTY. LIKE HIM THE JOURNALIST MARTINEZ ZOGO GROWS ALSO BEHIND THE BARS FOR SIMILAR REASONS. WHO'S NEXT ?????? THAT'S ENOUGH!
