Yaoundé: arsonists visit again

A fire broke out on the night of Sunday January 12 to Monday January 13, 2020 in the Elig-Effa district in Yaoundé. According to local sources, a carpentry shop and a bar were destroyed. Huge material damage has been recorded.

In the Elig-Effa district of Yaoundé, the inhabitants faced a drama on the night of January 12 to 13. Powerless, they watched the flames destroy a carpentry and a bar. “The fire started around 8pm. I was sitting in my living room and it was the cries of the neighbors that alerted me. When I left the house, I noticed that the flames had already invaded the carpentry which is in front of my door. I tried to break the back door of the carpentry to save the equipment, unfortunately the flames erupted and the mountain turned back, ”says Pierre, a resident of the Elig-Effa district.

"I left by Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m. and I took care to disconnect all of the electrical circuit that powers the devices. It is a security system that allows us to avoid short circuits. So I am surprised to receive a phone call Sunday evening which informs me that my workshop is on fire. Not being sure about the place at the moment, it is the stories of the neighbors who inform me that the fire started sometimes from my carpentry, sometimes from the bar. So far, we have no idea of the reason for the fire, ”says Gabriel Ndongo, the owner of the carpentry ravaged by flames.

Malicious people take the opportunity to do their dirty work

The balance sheet of material losses is quite substantial. Saws, generators and other materials have been burnt to the ground. On the side of the bar, everything burned down to the walls. Ndongo Gabriel tries to make an inventory of his losses. “If I only assess my losses, I find myself at around 20 million. Not to mention that my neighbor opposite kept his devices in my carpentry. He too lost everything in this fire. Yesterday during the mess there was here, malicious people took advantage to take away some of my machines. They also took away a new engine that I bought not long ago, ”laments Ndongo Gabriel who is trying to make an inventory of his losses /
