Yaoundé: 7 shops go up in flame


The fire, which started around 1 p.m. on December 19, in a building not far from Notre Dame des Victoires Cathedral, is said to have started a short circuit.

Seven shops in the “Super FKT” building, located near the Yaoundé Cathedral, went up in smoke, under the helpless gaze of the owners. “The fire started around 1 pm at the switches. I alerted my fellow traders and we put out the fire using a fire extinguisher. But five minutes later, a spark erupted and the fire started again on the roof. By the time we went to get something to put out the fire, the mattress store was already full of flames. I just had time to take my backpack and get out of the shop before I was burned alive, ”says Pierre, owner of a stationery store that burned, relates Ecomatin.

The flames were brought under control around 15 by the firefighters who arrived on the scene. For the moment, the official causes of this fire remain unknown. However, some traders in this area speak of a short circuit caused by poor connections and the wrong equipment used. According to the latter, The damage recorded is evaluated in several hundred million FCFA.
