Year 37 of renewal: Messanga Nyamding call out 'dryly' Paul Biya

The academic paints a dark picture of Paul Biya's 37 years at the head of Cameroon. But the one who proclaims himself "biyayist" attributes this assessment to the entourage of the Head of State. Pascal Messanga Nyamding, CPDP activist, the presidential party, gave an interview to radio Equinoxe this November 6, 2019. (The questions have been reformulated by the editor).

Question: What do you think is Paul Biya's 37 years at the head of Cameroon?

Messanga Nyamding: When President Paul Biya came to power, we were in a country where freedoms were virtually confiscated. You had Tcholliré's prisons, Yoko, BMM, the laws of 1962 - overnight, an administrative authority could decide to put you in jail - all this was repealed. High schools and colleges have been multiplied by one hundred. At the business level, it is President Paul Biya who teaches Cameroonians to make public contracts, it is he who budgeted oil. 37 years later, there has been a lot of progress even though there are still expectations.
Question: You speak of liberties, yet the political parties of the opposition have difficulties to express themselves.

Messanga Nyamding: It's nothing at all. Political parties hold meetings and meetings that bring nothing to the people in the villages. What did their meetings bring? That brought a Bello Bouba Maïgari to the government, Jean De Dieu Momo and the others. Ask me if opposition parties were banned from farming in the villages, why are not they cleaning the streets? Who said that when you create a political party, it's only for meetings? A political party is social action. It's the people who want to mess up who think that we just have to do the meetings. We know a political party when it works for development.

Question: And in your opinion, what are the negative points 37 years later?

Messanga Nyamding: For me, the most obvious failure is corruption, theft, embezzlement, sects, the emergence of social justice that we have expected and that we have not not seen. There, I am going to a meeting in Yabassi. But who am I going to talk to? People who have not had light for three months, people who are very poor ... Go see how sometimes the tax services, some departments of the judiciary, it is corruption. I believe that the biggest failure of Renewal is corruption, where people are no longer afraid to divert funds from the state. It has been proven that every second that passes, at least 6 million FCFA are in the vicinity of a corrupt. There is also the war in the Northwest and the Southwest, the copinages, the depoliticization of society. Look today at the nominations, how are they made? We do not know how we become head of department, director. The country is being held hostage by the high officials. Look at how the General Secretariat of the Presidency works. When you are not friends with the Secretary General of the Presidency you can not be promoted. The country goes very badly 37 years later, because people did not understand that Paul Biya came to power to bring to this country development, rigor, moralization. Unfortunately, all his former ministers want to be President. His worst enemies, Edzoa Titus, Kamto and all those who wanted his place, were they not his ministers? Question: Regarding the Anglophone crisis, a Grand National Dialogue was held last month with recommendations at the end. Why, in your opinion, President Paul Biya has not started their implementation yet?

Messanga Nyamding: Because President Paul Biya is in very bad shape at the moment, especially because of internal opposition with ramifications abroad. Have you seen what BAS has done to the President recently? Today, Cameroon is one of the few countries people tell you that they are terrorists but live in the United States. The United States that just came out of AGOA. It's a very bad sign. When the Americans have us under the purse, anything can happen ... I am among those who think that 37 years later, we must reconcile all Cameroonians. To answer your question, I am surprised that we have not learned the lessons of the past, that we observe the usual delays ... As I know President Biya well, who takes into account the opinions of Cameroon's bilateral partners.
