Ambazonia: this is what the UN proposes to Paul Biya

On the third day of her visit to Cameroon, Michelle Bachelet was received in audience by Paul Biya. The Head of State and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights met for several minutes on Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Unity Palace.

The President of the Republic unveiled the topics of discussion in a tweet published after the hearing. "I am delighted to have received today the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Ms. Michelle Bachelet and I discussed issues of peace, security, development and human rights in Cameroon, "said Paul Biya.

In the face of journalists, Michelle Bachelet revealed that she had offered the Cameroonian number 1 the help of the United Nations in the framework of respect for human rights. "We discussed how the United Nations can help in respect and protection of human rights," said the former President of Chile.

After several damning NGO reports pointing to human rights violations by the Cameroonian army, particularly in the context of the Anglophone crisis, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was invited by the Head of State to come assess the situation by itself. Michelle Bachelet, it should be remembered, was indignant at the "brutal approach of the security forces to the crisis in the North-West and South-West regions, including the destruction of medical facilities, whole schools and villages ".

In addition to the President of the Republic and members of the government, the UN diplomat will meet parliamentarians and civil society actors.
