Statement by the US Embassy on the Fire at Kumba District Hospital in the Southwest Region.

"The United States condemns the criminal attack on the Kumba District Hospital in the Southwest Region. The fire caused the death of several patients and caused considerable damage in the early morning of 11 February.

We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and our admiration for the brave medical staff. We call on the Cameroonian government to conduct a transparent investigation into this crime, to ensure that the courts hold the perpetrators accountable and to inform the Cameroonian people of its findings.

We urge both parties in the northwestern and southwestern regions of Cameroon to allow unhindered access to humanitarian workers and health workers and to never attack hospitals or health centers. We call on both sides of the Anglophone conflict to renounce violence and to engage in an expanded dialogue without preconditions. "
