Re-election of Paul Biya: the United States reacts!

Heather Nauert, spokesperson for the US State Department, made a statement to the press on October 22, 2018.

The United States notes that the Cameroonian presidential election was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere. The country of Donald Trump finds irregularities but stresses that they are not likely to change the outcome of the poll.Washington finally calls for dialogue for the resolution of the Anglophone crisis.

Here is the statement:

"The United States congratulates the Cameroonian people for the largely peaceful elections of 7 October. We urge all parties, including the government, to respect the rule of law, peacefully resolve any dispute through legal channels, and to avoid hate speech.

We welcome the significant improvement of the Cameroon Electoral Commission over the 2011 elections, but we noted a number of irregularities before, during and after the elections of 7 October. These irregularities may not have affected the result, but gave the impression that the elections were not credible or truly free and fair.

We commend the African Union Election Observation Mission for its opening statement, namely that "the current framework needs to be strengthened to preserve the democratic principles of separation of powers, equity, independence and impartiality ".

Following the presidential elections, the United States strongly encourages the two parties involved in the conflict affecting the northwestern and southwestern regions of Cameroon to to focus on the settlement of disputes through peaceful dialogue and to allow unhindered access to humanitarian aid workers ".
