Gunmen fail to stop CPDM campaign launch in Manyu

Gunmen who reportedly attempted to block the roads into Mamfe, South West Region of Cameroon on September 26 hoping to frustrate the launching of candidate Biya’s campaign on a CPDM ticket crumbled under security might. The unidentified gunmen suspected to be separatists’ adherents disappeared into the unknown after security contingents stormed a portion of the road they were attempting to block.

The National Times gathered that a few items which the attackers attempted to put on the road were cleared and traffic restored.  On Thursday, September 27, Special Duties Minister, Victor Arrey Mengot Nkongho, headed a delegation into Mamfe.

Though under tight military conduit, the Minister and his team staged their political show in favour of the CPDM candidate.

Besides Minister Nkongho, other Manyu elite such as Senate Vice President, George Tabetando Ndiepnso were also at the event.  Reports hold that some of the other elite who participated in the meeting drove into Mamfe dressed in military gear. Shortly after the political manifestation, the convoy left Manyu. Most of the elite headed back to Yaounde.

Just like in other Divisions in the troubled North West and South West Regions, the various Sub-divisional campaign teams were installed and tasked to campaign using the guidelines of the party.  Manyu is among the Divisions with deserted communities owing to the Anglophone Crisis. Most of its inhabitants have escaped to neighbouring communities in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.  Others are in towns across the French-speaking part of the country.

Observers are keen on seeing how voting will unfold in the interiors of Divisions such as Lebialem, Meme, Ndian and Manyu with high rates of insecurity.
