Biya suspends Public Works Minister’s signature, sends Sparrow Hawk behind him

The signature of the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, has reportedly been suspended by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya.

The information is revealed by the French daily, Le Point Hebdo. In its edition of Tuesday, August 28, the newspaper alleged that immediately Paul Biya regained Cameroon after 13 days sojourn abroad, he suspended the signature of Minister Nganou Djoumessi.

Moreover, the newspaper reported that before leaving for China, President Biya, sent investigators to probe into the contracts awarded to tare the east entrance into Douala.

Nganou Djoumessi as reported by the newspaper is being awaited at the Kondengui Maximum Security Prison where he would be awaiting trial for suspected cases of mismanagement and corruption.

It should be noted that after some newspaper reports and social media outings, the Minister of Public Works made a press outing last week wherein he confirmed that the Government is spending a whopping FCFA 43 billion on a 9 km road at the east entrance into the nation’s economic capital.

The Minister justified the gross expenditure on the fact that the 9km road would be a three-way traffic making it 27 km in total.

From every indication, this press outing and his utterances did not go down well with the public and the Government of Cameroon, especially as most public contracts and developmental projects in the country are being bankrolled from loans from overseas partners with high interest rates.

However, it is still not clear if Paul Biya is actually putting Djoumessi under investigation as the Minister is part of the Presidential entourage to China. However, Nganou Djoumessi’s trip to China may just be a distraction to enable the investigators to probe in the Minister’s files in his absent.
