The traders of the said market and the security forces who arrived at the scene watched, helplessly, the flames destroy the shops and stalls. The cause of the fire has not been established, but the Manyu authorities believe it is arson.

On the night of 29-30 November 2017, armed assailants attacked the Otu National Security border crossing, killing two police officers. Also in the town of Mamfe, four soldiers were killed in the night of 28 to 29 November in another attack.

Despite the declaration of war made on November 30, 2017 by the supreme commander of the armed forces, Paul Biya, assailants returned to Mamfe on December 8. They had attacked the staff of the gendarmerie killing one of the gendarmes who were on duty and injuring nine other soldiers.
